Programs for Gifted and Talented Learners

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FOR   GIFTED AND TALENTED/ ADVANCED LEARNERS

Advanced level classes and differentiated programs are available for secondary students who may not be identified gifted but require a rigorous curriculum. The following offerings are available for these advanced learners as well as gifted learners.

Advanced Placement Program (AP)

The Advanced Placement Program in MISD comprehensive high schools provides  advanced high school students exposure to college-level material and provides them the opportunity to show what they have learned by taking AP Exams.

Many colleges and universities will  grant college credit to these students for their scores on the AP exams.

McAllen ISD offers a full range of AP classes in all high schools. The program begins in the ninth and tenth grades with Pre-AP classes that prepare the students for AP courses in grades eleven and twelve.

AP prepares students for the future by giving them academic tools that will serve them well throughout their college careers.

Concurrent Enrollment

MISD, in collaboration with the University of Texas-Pan American and South Texas College, offers educational opportunities and experiences to academically talented high school juniors and seniors. This collaboration enables students to get a head start on their college degrees before high school graduation

MISD participates in the programs for fourth and fifth and seventh grade students.

Distinguished Level of Achievement

The Distinguished Level of Achievement requires more math and more science than the House Bill 5 Foundation High School Program.  MISD encourages all students to carefully consider their choices for  colleges and universities and the course of study.  Several  university programs in Texas require students to have completed calculus and physics.

For freshman entering 2013 and after, MISD  students will  graduate with  one or more of the House Bill 5 Academic Endorsements.
