McAllen Independent School District recognizes the importance of building literacy and increasing fluency in students. Reading fluency and literacy ensures the development of advanced writing and thinking skills. Research supports the idea that students who reading throughout the summer demonstrate significant academic gains. It is the goal of McAllen ISD to provide students with the opportunity to engage in reading experiences that help build a passion for reading, learning, and success in all future academic endeavors.
This sight has posted flyers for book titles and summer reading assignments for students in grade 3 – 12. Each campus may have additional information posted on their home page. While there is a selected text for each grade level, there are some grade levels that provide students and families with options to chose from. Each year – committees of teachers work together to adopt the summer reading list in collaboration with the Advanced Academic Department and the English Language Arts Department.
We encourage all students to read these books and find other books to read as well. Fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, news articles, journals and poetry are the recommended genres. Parents are encouraged to read alongside their child or teen and ask about the reading, as well as inquire into the learning assignments. Students should have all reading and assignments completed before the first week of school. Each teacher is different and may have different ideas as to how they will be using the summer reading! Please check the Achieve Early College High School website and the Lamar Academy IB Programme website for different summer reading assignments and books.
