Program highlights

AgricultureThis cluster focuses on the essential elements of life – water, air, food, and land. If you love to be outdoors, enjoy caring for plants and animals, and want to help conserve our natural resources, then this might be the right cluster for you.

AgScience students at McAllen ISD can choose to raise an animal as part of their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program.  A livestock project carries the expectation that it serves as a microcosm of the larger industry. Students experience a true test of responsibilities and undergo a series of life tests. Livestock shows help students keep current on species trends, and attending the shows provides insight into improvements being mad e with animals. Students learn how improvements meet industry standards. Time spent on a livestock project includes the work of students, parents and the agriculture teacher. The teacher makes personal visits- a huge part of the process. They meet with parents and the student to discuss everything from feed rations to animal health and record keeping, as well as financial transactions that take place with a livestock show project.

There are lots of intangibles gained from livestock shows: critical thinking, problem solving and acute observation skills. Students look back on their experience with a sense of accomplishment and learn from their mistakes. Facilities for boarding animals are available at the Agricultural Farm.

Some courses require an application and acceptance into the program.
