Twenty one teams, from elementary through high school, have qualified for the state chess tournament following a tournament held Jan. 27-28. Teams had to finish in the top three or, have a player finish in the top three individually to qualify for the state tournament which will be in March.
The qualifying teams include:
Kinder/First Grade: Sanchez, Garza and Perez.
Second & Third Grade Primary JV: Perez, Rayburn, Garza, Gonzalez, McAuliffe and Castaneda.
Second & Third Grade Primary Championship: Sanchez and Gonzalez.
Fourth & Fifth Grade Elementary JV: Castaneda.
Fourth & Fifth Grade Elementary Championship: Perez.
Sixth-Eighth Grade Team MS JV: Morris and De Leon.
Sixth-Eighth Grade Team MS Championship: Morris.
Ninth-12th Grade Team HS JV: Achieve ECHS, Rowe High.
There were also many outstanding individual performances. In the Kinder/First Grade Division, McAllen ISD students took eight of the top 15 spots including a tie for first place. In the Second & Third Grade Primary JV, McAllen ISD students won seven of the top nine spots including first place. In the Second & Third Grade Primary Championship Division, district students earned seven of the top eight positions including a four-way tie for first place (all four are McAllen ISD students).
McAllen ISD students also earned first place in the Fourth & Fifth Grade Elementary JV Division and second place in the Fourth & Fifth Grade Elementary Championship Division. McAllen ISD had a student finish in a tie for third in the Sixth-Eighth Grade MS JV competition and two high school students finished at the top (first place and tied for second) in the Ninth-12th Grade HS JV competition.
