Peter Choi of Gonzalez Elementary emerged as the champion for the 2017 District Spelling Bee, held February 3. He will be joined by two other qualifiers for the Regional Spelling Bee next month. Second place went to Hannah Faith Garcia of Fossum Middle School and Oscar Cruz of Jackson Elementary took third. Garcia advanced to the Regional Bee for the second straight year. In the 19th round, Choi successfully spelled “mammoth” to clinch the win. The 29th annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee will be March 4 at South Texas College in Weslaco. The Regional winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 27-June 2 in Washington, D.C.
