Just call them the Quad Squad. The McAllen High School Mariachi Oro won its fourth consecutive state championship following competition this past weekend in San Antonio.
They are champions for Class 6A after winning at the TAME (Texas Association of Mariachi Educators) State Finals held Feb. 3-4 at the South San Antonio High Performing Arts Complex.
The McAllen High Mariachi Oro has been the Class 6A State Champs at the MASBA/TAME State Mariachi Competition in 2015-17. In 2014, they were Class 5A State Champs at the MASBA (Mexican American School Board Association) Mariachi Competition.
Both McAllen High and James “Nikki” Rowe High competed at state – the first time McAllen ISD has sent two mariachi groups to the state level. Both advanced to state from the Area Contest held January 12. The directors for the McAllen High Mariachi are Alex Trevino and David Moreno. Juan Castillo is the director for the Nikki Rowe High Mariachi.
McAllen ISD is a four-time winner of the national Best Community for Music Education award, presented by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). The award goes to fewer than four percent of school districts nationwide.
