Six McAllen ISD students have been selected to the All-Region Jazz Band with three of them earning the top chair.
Students from McAllen Memorial and McAllen Rowe High auditioned for the Region 15 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) High School All-Region Jazz Band September 16 in Mission.
“We are very proud that the best Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone and Bari Saxophone are all from McAllen ISD,” McAllen ISD Fine Arts Director Jim Egger said. “For this competition, only a limited number of students are selected. These students and their music teachers have been working hard over the last several weeks in preparation for this audition. Congratulations to these talented and hard-working musicians.”
Four of the six students were also selected for the All-Area Jazz Band and are now one step away from being selected as a member of the TMEA All-State Jazz Band.
The students from Memorial High include Oswaldo Soria-Cueto, 1st chair Tenor Saxophone, All-Area Jazz Band member; Edgar Torres, All-Region Jazz Band Tenor Saxophone; and Brandon Cortez, All-Region Jazz Band Trombone. The students from Rowe High include Brandon Rios, 1st Chair Alto Saxophone and All-Area Jazz Band member; C.J. Velasco, 1st Chair Bari Saxophone and All- Area Jazz Band member; and Jorge Segovia, All-Area Jazz Band Trombone.
In addition, two students from Memorial High were awarded First Alternate. They are Michael Cisneros (Alto Saxophone) and Christian Aguilar (Drum Set).
McAllen ISD is a five-time winner of the national Best Community for Music Education award, presented by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM).
