Three outstanding McAllen ISD students among just 10 from RGV to earn Head of the Class awards

Students from McAllen High, Memorial High and James “Nikki” Rowe High were honored by the Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol which presented its annual Head of the Class awards to students from 10 high schools on January 25 at McAllen High. Pictured from left to right are Misael Salinas Gonzalez of McAllen High, Diana Isabel Diaz of Memorial High and Rafael Sanchez of Rowe High.

Misael is Vice President of Student Council, an Interact Club member, AVID tutor and is certified for 911 Dispatch. He was honored as a McAllen Student of the Week, Rotary Student of the Month and Top Math Student/Tutor. He has a passion for community service, donating his time to the H-E-B Feast of Sharing and volunteering at local church events.

Diana is an outstanding senior who has an abiding interest in public service. As a participant in the South Texas College Dual Enrollment Academy, she will graduate from South Texas College with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Diana participated in athletics and has been a member of the Student Council. She also donates her time to her local church.

Rafael is a well-rounded student who takes part in many different activities. He is President of the Interact Club and a member of the National Hispanic Institute, Student Council, HOSA and the Yearbook Committee. Rafael donates his time to his community by participating in local clean-up projects and church sales. He also provides algebra tutoring to other local students.
