McHIMariachiVocalistsThree Mariachi performers from McAllen High School plus one middle school student have been selected as finalists for the 20th annual “Best in the U.S.” Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Vocal Competition Nov. 22 in San Antonio. It was an A+ Moment for Freshman Kamryn Ramírez, sophomore Katherine Pérez, senior Kyline Stephens and sixth grader Christina Lopez of Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School. Read more.

Student engineering dream one Friday at a time

The Wright Stuff: Thomas Wright, a senior in McAllen ISD’s IB Programme, studies a video on Chaos Theory Nov. 7 at Lamar Academy. Wright has ambitions to become an engineer. It’s nearly the same scene every Friday. Students are gathered in groups in the science lab at McAllen ISD’s Lamar Academy.  They eagerly enter codes using a programming language called Python that will create 3D images in their seats. The teacher gives them some prompts but otherwise they can explore what happens on their own. Read more.

That’s how many college credit hours the graduates of the Class of 2015 earned while seeking professional licenses, certifications and Associates Degrees.

It translates into instant savings of time and money for families. How much? For last year alone, the potential savings was nearly $6.5 million.* One student earned 76 college credit hours, worth an estimated $31,500*, by the time he received his high school diploma.

We have students who begin college as sophomores, juniors and nearly seniors giving them a huge jump start toward a career.
