Steppers win big at state contest, perform at Spurs' game

The McAllen High Steppers Dance Team took home 11 team awards and six individual awards in the Showmakers of America Contest – a statewide competition – held February 8 in Pearland, Texas.

These awards include:

  • 1st place Hip Hop
  • 1st place Jazz
  • 1st place Lyrical
  • Best In Class Small Team
  • Line Of Champions 2020
  • 1st and 2nd place Officers Katarina Moseley , Yahaira Cerda, & Taylor Winger for small ensemble #1 and #2
  • Yahaira Cerda 2nd place solo in 11th & 12th grade division
  • Elizabeth Garza 3rd place solo in 11th & 12th grade division
  • Camille Alvarez 3rd place solo in 9th and 10th grade division.
  • *Taylor Ehlinger & Sophia Rios- 3rd place duet
  • Sweepstakes for Hip Hop , Lyrical, & Jazz
  • Outstanding Showmanship for Hip Hop & Jazz
  • Outstanding Choreography for Hip Hop, Lyrical, & Jazz
  • Outstanding Technique Hip Hop & Jazz
  • Outstanding Precision Hip Hop
  • Best Overall Entertainment Hip Hop

The Steppers have been active lately. They took fourth place out of 28 teams at the Spurs Dance Competition and performed in the pre-game of the Spurs’ basketball game played February 1 in San Antonio. Here is a video of that performance courtesy of the Spurs’ organization.

On January 30, the Steppers earned straight ones in both the Prepared and Impromptu categories at the Rio Grande Valley Dance Evaluation at Valley View High School.

The Steppers are under the direction of Ms. Rachel Castillo-Ruiz.
