All six McAllen ISD middle schools earned awards at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation held March 10-11. In fact, 11 of the 12 McAllen ISD bands competing earned either a Sweepstakes Award or a Superior plaque.
Four McAllen ISD bands earned the UIL Sweepstakes Award – the highest honor.
“The groups from McAllen ISD did well,” McAllen ISD Fine Arts Director Jim Egger said. “We also had five of our schools send more than one band to compete and Morris Middle School had three competing bands. Congratulations to all of these very talented band students and their hard-working band directors.”
In choir, orchestra and band, McAllen ISD has sent the most music groups (50) to the UIL Evaluations. McAllen ISD also has earned the highest number of UIL Sweepstakes Awards (37). In fact, despite competing against larger school districts, McAllen ISD had sent 28 percent of the total groups competing and earned 29 percent of all Sweepstakes Awards.
“This shows the strength of our music program in McAllen ISD,” Egger said.
