City of McAllen honors chess teams

McAllen ISD chess teams that qualified for nationals were recognized with a proclamation at City Hall on April 23.
Four different teams from McAllen ISD won chess state championships this spring. In addition, 22 teams from 11 schools have qualified to compete at the National Chess Competition.
A team from the Achieve Early College High School joined two teams from Sanchez Elementary and one from Garza Elementary as state champions. This makes five state chess titles won by McAllen ISD teams since McAllen ISD began fielding competitive chess teams in 2016.
Other teams who advanced to National competition are from Rowe High School, Morris Middle School, De Leon Middle School, Castaneda Elementary, Fields Elementary, Gonzalez Elementary, Perez Elementary and Rayburn Elementary. Each school will be taking five students per team.
The Middle School and High School National competition will be held April 27-29 in Columbus, Ohio and the Elementary National competition will be held May 11-13 in Nashville, Tennessee.
