Department Iniatiative - I Can Do It!

I CAN DO IT!  OVERVIEW

What is I Can Do It, You Can Do It!?

ICDI is a "free" mentoring program that seeks to facilitate and encourage opportunities for children and youth across the nation to be physically active, practice healthy eating habits, and receive the PALA+ Award for their efforts. Upon setting a weekly healthy eating goal and maintaining 30 – 60 minutes of activity (depending of physical ability) five days a week for an eight week period, ICDI participants earn the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+) which includes a certificate signed by the President of the United States.

How We Do It!

I Can Do It! Works to achieve its mission through the program’s three core tenets:

MENTORING: School site personnel (teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and peers) guide students through physical education, physical activity, and sports opportunities and healthy eating habits;

GOAL SETTING: School site personnel work with students on setting weekly, grading period, or semester goals.

RECOGNITION: After completing the program for a minimum of 8 weeks, students earn their PALA+ awards (certificate and patch).  It is recommended that in the school setting the program is conducted all year long with an end of year awards celebration/ceremony.

How it All Comes Together: TEAMWORK!

ICDI thrives on the engagement and active participation of not only the mentor and mentee, but the mentee’s parents/guardians, peers, and family, too. The family setting is a critical component of this program in that parents, siblings, and caretakers serve in a supportive role to ensure that the youth with a disability continues to be physically active and monitors their nutritional habits. As a family unit, the I Can Do It program will also serve as a motivator for the entire family to engage in a healthier lifestyle where they all can receive the PALA+.  Through this process, it becomes a lifelong habit beyond the program.

Awards and Recognition: YOU DESERVE IT!

Presidential Active Lifestyle Award: Physical Activity plus Nutrition (PALA+)

Upon setting a weekly healthy eating goal and maintaining 30 – 60 minutes of activity (depending of physical ability) five days a week for an eight week period, ICDI participants earn the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+) which includes a certificate signed by the President and a PALA+ patch. To receive the PALA awards, an activity log is kept that shows they have been physically active for at least 5 days per week, 1 hour per day, for 8 weeks.
