Advanced Academics College Readiness Programs

College Readiness Programs  and differentiated programs are available for gifted/talented and advanced secondary students. 

Advanced Placement Program (AP) The Advanced Placement Program in MISD comprehensive high schools provides  advanced high school students exposure to college-level material and provides them the opportunity to show what they have learned by taking AP Exams.

Many colleges and universities will  grant college credit to these students for their scores on the AP exams.

McAllen ISD offers a full range of AP classes in all high schools. The program begins in the ninth and tenth grades with Pre-AP classes that prepare the students for AP courses in grades eleven and twelve.

AP prepares students for the future by giving them academic tools that will serve them well throughout their college careers.

Dual Enrollment and Concurrent Enrollment MISD, in collaboration with the University of Texas-OnRamps, South Texas College, and UTRGV offers educational opportunities and experiences to academically talented high school juniors and seniors. This collaboration enables students to get a head start on their college degrees before high school graduation

International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) International Baccalaureate  Middle Years Program and the Diploma Programme,  is a rigorous pre-university course of studies that meets the needs of highly motivated high school students during 9th – 12th grade.

This program’s  curriculum aims to encourage critical thinking by the study of traditional disciplines while encouraging an international perspective.

The Lamar Academy Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme are housed at Lamar Academy and serves students from the district’s three high schools. Students who successfully complete the program receive college credit as well as an international diploma that is recognized by prestigious universities throughout the world.  Lamar Academy/IB Programme has been named a “School of Distinction” by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

DeLeon Middle School located in North McAllen on 29th and Nolana, offers the IB Middle Years Programme to 6th – 8th grade.  The Middle School has partnered with Lamar Academy to offer an enhanced experience for IB/GT learners who would like to take challenging high school courses at Lamar Academy while in middle school.  For more information contact:  Yvette Castillo at 956-632-8800.
