Michelle Cavazos, a third-grade dual language teacher at Sanchez Elementary, was surprised in her classroom with news she was a state finalist for the Rising Star category in the H-E-B Excellence in Education awards on Feb. 6, 2024.
H-E-B presented Ms. Cavazos with $1,000 plus another $1,000 for her campus.
"It was very, very exciting," Ms. Cavazos said. "I'm just so happy that I served as a good example for these students to see 'wow, if my teacher can do all these things, I can do that too.' " I'm very happy to portray that message to them."
The state winners will be announced by H-E-B in late spring. In 2022, McAllen ISD was named the Best Large District in Texas through the H-E-B Excellence in Education awards.
