The McAllen High girls cross country team from the late 1970s was something special.
In 1979, they finished as the state’s runner up in Class 5A after winning the district title and the regional championship. The team is set to be honored by the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony Saturday, June 28, at the Harlingen Convention Center.
They are one of five teams from Valley sports history to be recognized in the RGV Sports Hall of Fame’s Hall of Honor.
Founded in 1985, the RGV Sports Hall of Fame is a not-for-profit organization whose mission it is to recognize men and women who have brought honor and recognition to the Rio Grande Valley through their participation in sports as an athlete, coach, official, trainer, journalist or other sports-related position.
