A US Congressman formally recognized a McAllen High student in Washington, D.C. recently, for her unprecedented and historical achievement.
Addison Humphreys, a senior at McAllen High, received formal recognition in the Congressional Record of the US House of Representatives. The document reads “Honoring Miss Addison Humphreys for distinguished academic achievement and leadership.”
Congressman Vicente Gonzalez recognized Humphreys on September 14.
“I rise today to recognize Miss Addison Humphreys of McAllen, Texas, a member of the McAllen High School Class of 2027, whose academic, excellence, leadership, and service reflect the very best of South Texas,” Congressman Gonzalez said on the House floor. “(Humphreys) has pursued a rigorous course of study in preparation for a future in medicine.”
The Congressional Record goes on to recognize Addison as a top-four-percent student at McAllen High and highlights her leadership as Texas HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)–Future Health Professionals State President. It also notes that she is the first student in McAllen ISD and Hidalgo County history to hold both area and state HOSA office. As President, she represents more than 51,000 students across 1,570 state chapters.

Congressman Gonzalez also noted her founding of Books2Border, her more than 1,300 documented community-service hours, her research through DHR Health’s LASER (Leaders in the Advancement of Science and Education and Research) Program, and her work educating approximately 2,500 students about stroke recognition. Through the LASER Program, she has researched childhood obesity and Type II diabetes risk in the Rio Grande Valley and has been selected to present her work internationally.
Congressman Gonzalez added that Humphreys reflects “the hard work, compassion, and spirit of service that define our communities. She has a bright future ahead of her and has made South Texas proud.”
