William Greer of McAllen ISD’s Lamar Academy has become the first McAllen ISD student ever to win the Regional Citizen Bee civics competition to earn a spot in the state championship event.

Greer won the virtual Regional Bee March 31. McAllen ISD actually took the top two spots with Carolina Castillo of Achieve Early College High finishing second but only the top winner advances to state.

The Texas Citizen Bee is a statewide civic education program and competition. Students use an online guide to prepare for a two-part competition. Students must answer questions in the following categories to advance: people, civic values and skills, documents and Supreme Court cases, current events and the Constitution.

The Regional Citizen Bee began with a written component. Those who advanced participated in the oral rounds. Each region in Texas may send their first place winner to compete in the State Citizen Bee hosted by the Texas State Bar by Law Related Education. This typically takes place in Austin but will be held virtually May 18-19.
