McAllen ISD's Travis Middle School is one of 205 recipients nationwide for a Laura Bush Grant.

Travis Middle School Librarian Roxann Martinez (photo below) got to be in the virtual audience for "The Kelly Clarkson Show" when they featured the grant winners. She was selected from the virtual audience to share her thoughts on the grant. The show aired Tuesday, May 18.

In addition to the $5,000 grant from Laura Bush, Travis Middle School was one of 15 Texas-based schools chosen by H-E-B to share $100,000 (about $6,666 per school). The school also received approximately $5,000 from Scholastic Books which provided funds to all 34 educators in the virtual audience for "The Kelly Clarkson Show."

The total of funds awarded to Travis Middle School library is approximately $16,666 which will go toward books for this fall.

Studies show that the quality of a school library has a major impact on reading test scores and academic success.  Since 2002, the Laura Bush Foundation has awarded more than $16 million to more than 2,800 schools across the country. Laura Bush is a former librarian and teacher.
